Back in the day, what day would that be?

It's amazing to see my grand daughter play with educational toys the way they were designed to be played with.

She loves the "VTech Smile Baby System"... WTH? is that what I didn't do when I was a young parent? I failed to get my kids "Systems".
smilebaby system

Damn, life woulda sure been easier if I'd only gotten my children a System!

Seriously, the electronic flashing, sqweaking, wiggleing brightly colored toys really do grab and keep her attention. She loves that teddy bear.

Back in MY day... Dr Brown's baby bottles?

I'm loving life... I get to take care of my precious grand baby and I do NOT have to deal with any of the downside of being a parent.

When I was a young parent we didn't have all the fancy time saving gadgetry that my grand daughter has at her beck and call:

Hi tech baby bottles 1

Back in My Day, the tried and true baby bottle, you know, the one that when baby was finished eating you had to burp them?, the old standby had a single challenger:

The Playtex whatever they called it, it had a plastic bag inside the bottle, the theory being that the breast milk being inside the bag would tend to cut down on baby swallowing air, hence need to burp.

My daughter has found these gizzmo baby bottles and they work better than the Playtex thingies from 25 years ago:

Dr. Brown's baby bottle system... ok so THAT'S what we did wrong in the 80's... we failed to comprehend that what we NEEDED was a 'system'...

Ok,I get it now:

Hillarious videos

Enjoy these hilarious videos while I write something useful... it's hard to be a writer or type with one hand... holding my grand daughter with the other while she grabs at the cables coming out of the computer...

When do you ween the toddler you're taking care of off of milk?

What babies are really thinking!

Extended Family, I never had that.

I'm a new Grand Dad so I'm in unfamiliar territory.

I never had the benefit of having extended family. Now I AM the extended family...
and I'm loving it.

Now I can enjoy my grand baby with out the stress.
Now I can teach my grand baby stuff secure in the knowledge that I've got 30 plus years of experience in what IS a good idea to teach a toddler and what ISN'T a good idea to teach a toddler!

Wow, 30 years of experience... I've gotten pretty good at this parenting stuff after all. I definitely know what NOT to do. I'm an expert in what NOT to do.

That fact alone is very comforting.

Neuro Linguistic Programming and Parenting

Neuro Linguistic Programming or N.L.P. is... how shall I describe it, to say it's hypnosis is a misnomer. It's the basis of Anthony Robbins work, and without going into all kinds of 'structure of subjective experience' techy talk, let's just say there is such a thing as: Dissociation

Dissociation as a Grand Parent?

In NLP if you're wanting to improve your personal experience of something, or wanting to reduce the effect of your reaction to a past event so it will have less impact on your present affairs, NLP offers this 'dissociation' as a tool to effect said change.

Wow, a mouthful, what's that got to do with being a Grand Parent?

When I was a young father, I was so caught up in relationship crap (ex cheated on me), office politics, so caught up in: "How am I going to pay this months rent" that it detracted from my 'being there' for my children.

The Lights were On, No One Was Home

Be Here Now
... my body was in the room, but "I" wasn't really present when my kids were toddlers. Instead of being a functional parent, I was a dysfunctional jealous love addict (you get the picture)

To heal a memory like that, to remove or lessen the full force of shame, NLP offers this process as a tool:

Imagine your life is a movie. You however are sitting front row at a movie theater watching the movie of your being portrayed in the movie.

When I was a stressed out parent, I was 'up there' IN the movie

Now I'm sitting in the audience watching the events as a spectator, and not so caught up in the melodrama that I can not function effectively.

Fast forward to today:

I can 'parent' my Grand Baby and I'm 'there' but don't have to deal with everything 'there'

Now, this go around, I'm able to focus on my grand baby and not be distracted by 'how am I gonna pay for this, and pay for that, and why isn't she home yet, and why am I picking up the baby when she got off already...'

Dissociated from the day to day crap and now fully in the moment.

My Grand baby's eye's LIGHT UP when I find something to teach her!

It's now a game she recognizes... I pick her up and we walk towards... something catches her attention, she KNOWS that if she leans toward X, Y or Z, Grand Daddy will let her hover over what ever it is until she's bored with it.

She is so inquisitive, I love being there for her.

and I really love that I don't have to worry about who is going to do all this dirty laundry, or take the trash out (it's not my job!)
My Job is to love my Grand Baby.

More later

Now the Dog is Neurotic???

Now that there is a new baby in the house is your pet suffering from the shock of no longer being the 'baby of the house'??

Ours is... It's not really "our" dog, it's my daughter's dog. I'm now enjoying the fact that I AM the extended family!

I didn't have an extended family when I had kids, my parents split up when I was a pre teen, Dad moved to one coast, Mom moved to the other side of the planet, literally!

So back to the dog being second fiddle, what am I doing about it?

Dogs can not have two masters I'm told. My son in law is the master of his castle, I'm just the 'extended family' part of the system. I provide the day care!

I do know that dogs need a regular schedule that they can adjust to... and the dog is being forced to adjust to the new baby.

More coming... it really does look like I'm going to have to create my posts piecemeal, write a bit, change a diaper, pull the baby away from what she's getting into

BRB

Asleep for a nap...finally!

It's been 17 years since I've changed a dirty diaper,

back then I was:
  • Young and inexperienced at life in general

  • Over Worked and tired all the time

  • Overwhelmed with yet another mouth to feed

  • Didn't know I was codependent

  • Stressed out from a non functional relationship (sig other)

  • What a difference being: Older, Wiser, With more money, Less bills, and can go home when Grand Daddy Day Care is over!!!!

With a failed relationship (we never got married) and the crappy way I dealt with the break up, I really did fear that I'd screwed my kids up... Hell, I needed therapy and I was an adult... it only made sense that my kids might be at least as dysfunctional as their parents were.

Apparently my kids were watching and learning.

I ran a small (tiny) landscape contractor business, El Nino put me out of business in 1998 -100 days with no rain - 100 days over 90°

I went out of business... and my stress levels were so high... and my wife was cheating on me... I was a mess.

I really did think I'd screwed up my kids.

Well, what I didn't know then is that they were watching me, they were watching me like a hawk! My girls took away from the experience of being my offspring the best of what I demonstrated, modeled for them and... they learned from my mistakes!!!

I didn't know that they learned what NOT to do. Now that they are parents (and I'm a Grand Dad) they're much better equipped for the job of parenting than I was at that age.

    Baby Raising Technology.

My Grand Children have amazing stuff to play with, educational toys to play with that was not available when I was a young father. My God, even the baby bottles went high tech, in my fathering days the neat thing was the bottle with a plastic bag that collapsed as the baby drank. My granddaughter has some kind of needle that lets the air flow back down into the bottle so she doesn't need to burp so much.. it's dizzying and I'm grateful.

I didn't have the luxury of extended family, my Dad moved to the west coast and my mom moved to Africa first then Japan. She settled in Louisiana, I lived in Gaithersburg Maryland, about 600 miles or so from them.

    Extended Family

that's gonna have to wait for another post... GrandBabies Daddy came home and I can get something to eat now!!

Practice doing everything with one arm...

As a new grand father I'm finding that I'm out of practice!

I've got to get used to opening baby bottles with a baby on my hip, One Handed EVERYTHING!

It's great to be a grand father, I'm finding that I get to spend all the quality time with my precious grandbaby and don't have the pressures I felt when I was a new father 22 years ago.

I've got to change a diaper... BRB

You try typing with one hand, or should I say finger!
